Over the winter of 2014-15, we’ve been developing and trialling our first 20 inch loopwheels designed especially for recumbent trikes. The springs are designed to cope with fast cornering and the particular forces of side-axles. We’re really happy with the results. Loopwheels-builder Graeme cycles the 12 miles to work on his trike most days – fitted with loopwheels, of course. He’s been pushing us to get these ready to share! We showed these new trike wheels at the Spezi show in Germersheim, Germany on 25 and 26 April 2015, along with another new design for trikes, with our own hubs and a disc brake fitting.

Loopwheels use an off-the-shelf bicycle wheel but removes the spokes in place of a spring system between the hub and the rim for integral suspension. That suspension is made up of three carbon composite springs that act as shock absorbers with 45mm of travel, cushioning the rider for a smooth and comfortable ride. As you can see, the fitment looks very good on the car. The wheels and tires fill out the wheel wells satisfyingly, though don’t rub in any way. Since the tires are summer fitment, we are running them only in warmer weather. Before the seasons turned, we were able to log some miles and found that the greater weight and larger contact patch with summer compound tires did take a toll on range. We’ve seen that come in at about 185-190 miles for a full charge in fall temperatures.
We’re growing rapidly now. We’ve got good distributors in important export markets. We plan to expand into our current market and to look at taking our technology into other areas. This could be for use in other vehicles including for lightweight electric vehicles in our congested cities.

In the end, their method worked. Project e-tron now sits about 30mm lower than it did when it was delivered at the dealership. Effectively, every setting in the range is now 30mm lower, with the allroad setting being roughly equivalent to the previous comfort setting.

Rim and Wheel Works has a proprietary process that can straighten a number of wheel issues, from a "center bend" in which the wheel has actually twisted from impact, to TIG welding wheels that have cracked, then straightening the wheels after they've been welded. For wheels that have experienced slight damage, Rim and Wheel Works can repair them for between $110 to $135 for wheels up to 19 inches, and rising upward from there as the wheel gets larger.
