This is just something i thought of the instant i saw these, they do look fun though but if indeed they do feel like your “going up hill” all the time they’d have to be VERY fun to be worth the extra effort. I guess for crazy obstacles??

Wheels Wheelchair

The wheel allows for vertical compression but provides rigidity in the lateral direction. The LoopWheel technology can also be used for wheelchairs providing comfort for the user.
It's unclear at this point whether you'd lose any forward motion energy due to torque flex, but that can be tuned out of the system if required in any case. It's also unclear how much a pair of wheelchair-sized ASWs would cost at this point. We assume they're not cheap compared to a regular rim and tire setup. Here's some annoyingly infomercial-style video comparing regular wheelchair wheels to an ASW setup over curbs and grassy, uneven terrain.

Shock Absorbing Wheel

“In the past, if I wanted to go down the sidewalk or over any big bump in a regular wheelchair, I’d feel it a lot on my back, and it would really hurt. You do it a couple of times a day each day, a week, a month, a year – you’re talking about thousands of times,” Cohen told From the Grapevine. “With Acrobat, it's all absorbed into the wheel and not in the back, creating a better sensation when riding a wheelchair.”

  • Wheelchair With Rims

People have tried to make a wheel with suspension before but they have never had the right combination of design and materials.

Loopwheels are currently available in a 20-inch size for bikes and a larger size for wheelchairs. They are working on 26- and 29-inch wheels for bicycles. They are currently available as a retrofit for Dahon or Tern foldingbikes and have a 100mm front fork for the changeover. The wheels themselves cost $462 US while a Loopwheels folding bike will set you back $1,493.

Repairs aren't the only pricey setback, When it comes time to replace a high-performance, low-profile tire, the cost can be staggering. Take, for example, the 2011 Chrysler 300C AWD. By the time 35,000 miles pass, according to TireRack.com, you'll be looking at an $1,128 bill if you opt for the factory Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 tires in 235/55R19 size, not including mount, balance, tire disposal, or the four-wheel alignment that's always a good idea before investing in new rubber.

I don’t think it would affect the brake track. The wheel would flex on the bottom but would return to original shape and diameter when it rolled far enough to not be in contact with the ground. If it did not return to original shape or size after the flex the ride would be really crappy. iperov on April 14th, 2013 - 3:40pm Ck on April 14th, 2013 - 3:46pm comrade on April 14th, 2013 - 4:14pm seramik on April 14th, 2013 - 4:50pm MMyers on April 14th, 2013 - 5:39pm

Loopwheels ($300+) give you that comfortable ride you’ve been looking for. If you have a folding commuter bike like a Dahon Mu Uno, which doesn’t come with its own suspension system, then you neeed to take a look at Loopwheels. These suspension wheels allow you take bumps, curbs, and potholes in comfort with reduced vibration. The Loopwheel doesn’t fit every bike. It’s a 20″ wheel with specific clearance requirements, so check out their Kickstarter page to see if your bike is an option.

If you have questions or do not know the proper fitment on lowered, bagged, or even stock applications - complete our quote/fitment help form so that we may make our best recommendation for what should work. In some cases, minor trimming will be needed to accommodate oversized tires or wide / high negative offset wheels. Additionally, we cannot guarantee fitment on custom drilled wheels, but should the manufacturer make a mistake - we’ll help broker a solution. Some vehicles or applications may not apply. In those cases we’ll tell you before you purchase. Wow. You must have found a really good deal. Send us a link and we’ll beat it (or at least we’ll try, every once in a while we can’t.) Maybe I’m wrong but wouldn’t the wheel react differently every time you hit the same obstacle depending on how the shocks are pointed? Bartthebikeman on May 20th, 2016 - 2:58pm
