I suspect that many of us have had problems when it comes to carrying “stuff” on our bikes and trikes. Previously on bespoken we’ve featured articles on manual and motorised chairs which help the user negotiate uneven streets and rougher pathway, but a lot of them have been both expensive and a bit impractical for day-to-day use. A new Kickstarter, Loopwheels, addresses this problem with a simple and far more affordable design. Loopwheels contain integral suspension meaning the wheels absorb more shock than a standard wheel and allow the user to negotiate tougher terrains with greater ease and comfort. The Kickstarter also says that they can be fitted onto most standard wheelchairs. Following up from a successful campaign to raise funds for the Loopwheel as a bike wheel, this latest project has already raised over half of its £16,000 goal with 28 days left to go.

While entirely theoretical, Lee’s design is not without merit. Spokes and rims found on any standard bicycle already absorb shock, albeit minimally.
The spring system between the hub and the rim of the wheel cushions the user from bumps and potholes in the road. The springs absorb road noise, reducing vibration through the frame and into the rider’s arms and body. High-pressure or puncture-resistant tyres can be used.

Swing axles may be at the front or rear. The system is like a beam axle cut in half and attached to pivots on the frame.
A loopwheel doesn’t have the same rigidity and stiffness that’s necessary in a spoked wheel.

As you can see, the fitment looks very good on the car. The wheels and tires fill out the wheel wells satisfyingly, though don’t rub in any way. Since the tires are summer fitment, we are running them only in warmer weather. Before the seasons turned, we were able to log some miles and found that the greater weight and larger contact patch with summer compound tires did take a toll on range. We’ve seen that come in at about 185-190 miles for a full charge in fall temperatures.
In today’s full-suspension mountain bikes, the front and rear shocks do excellent jobs lessening those impact forces. And that helps keep riders logging miles and turning switchbacks.
Note: When used for mechanical supports, load capacities of brackets, fittings and other supporting elements should be in compliance with the American Standard Code for Pressure Piping. Clamps are designed to be used with W, M, S & HP Shape beams, Standard C & Misc. MC Channels, Angles & Structural Tees. Clamps must be used in pairs where indicated.
